Wide Plank Flooring Options

What wide plank flooring options are available? This is a question we sometimes get asked as customers seek solutions to making large, open spaces look even bigger.
A lot of the flooring collections we work with offer wide plank options, we look at the benefits and share some examples.

The benefits of a wide plank floor
As we mentioned, wide planks really do help to open up a space. With fewer visible joins you can help make your room look wider, and bigger. Whether you choose to lay your floor planks on the diagonal or in straight lines, wide planks make the difference. Plus, with the wider planks you get to see more of the detail in the wood, or the wood effect if you are choosing an LVT floor. The knots, grains, and imperfections will stand out that little bit more with a wide plank floor.
And if you are going for just the one room, depending on the floor type, a wide plank flooring installation is often quicker to complete!

The Huxley floor in the Ted Todd Classic Naturals collection with wide planks installed by Flooring 4 You Ltd in Cheshire
This is the Huxley floor in the Ted Todd Classic Naturals collection. The plank is an impressive 300mm super wide, and at 3m long it is super long too! It’s a great choice if you want more detail and fewer joins. What’s  also lovely about the Huxley floor, is that each plank is heavily brushed, so you really see the grain detail and can feel its lovely texture. This Huxley wide floor, which our team installed in Knutsford, has been finished with restoration oil to give it extra shine.

Wide Plank Laminate Floors
If you’re looking at a laminate floor, the collection with the ultimate in wide planks comes by way of the Majestic collection from Quick-Step. The laminates here all have an extra-large format, at 240mm wide. What’s great about the wide planks in this collection is that they are water-resistant, making them ideal for kitchen, utility, even bathroom environments as much as hallways and conservatories.
Majestic laminate floors look very natural and authentic - as good as wood even. But they are far more practical. Fitting these floors is often quicker and easier, thanks to the click method of installation, which can make a difference to the price of your overall flooring project.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring in Wide Plank Format
One of the best options on the market for wide planks in wood effect LVT, comes via Amtico. Their Spacia collection offers planks throughout in a wide format, coming in at 184.2mm. It’s a good size, and of course Amtico LVT floors are incredibly practical and long-lasting.

A lot of our customers carry the same Amtico floor through from the hallway into open plan kitchen and dining areas. And the beautiful thing about Spacia is that you can go for long wide planks in one area, and transition to smaller parquet blocks in another, without changing the floor colour or style.

This is an example of Amtico Spacia in a wide plank format, which we installed through a new kitchen extension in Timperley. It’s the Pale Ash colour floor which shows off so much detail through its delicate warm shades which complement the customer’s darker kitchen units.

There are options for extra wide plank sizes with Amtico’s Signature collection too. In fact, here you can go seriously wide with 228.6mm plank widths available. It’s all about design with Amtico, and there’s no better option for mixing, matching, and creating your very own unique floor, no matter what the size. Amtico Signature floors have a 1mm wear layer, which makes them seriously hard-wearing, and ideal for any busy area of the home.

Ted Todd have a specific Superwide collection within the Woodworks by Ted Todd offering. These are quite possibly some of the widest planks out of all the flooring options available, having widths of up to 400mm, and lengths of 3m long, to make a big impact on larger spaces.
The Superwide floors are all ‘super quality’ too, with the finishes being slow cured to bring you floors that feel natural, last a long time, and can withstand the busiest of areas in the home.

For example, one of our best-selling floors of 2021, and remaining popular as we start 2022, is the Furrow floor in the Warehouse collection.
