Carpet and flooring trends across the year
You only need to look through our Instagram, which you can find here, to see what styles and designs have been popular across the carpets and floors we’ve fitted this year.
We’re not talking aspirational pieces like rich colours or busy patterns like you’ll see in the glossy magazines. We’re talking the real on-trend floors and carpets which people want in their homes. The practical, stylish floors and carpets which not only look good, but which will last a long time.
So, here’s what we’ve been busy doing in 2024.
Light wood floors across homes
Yes, we wrote about the growing popularity in lighter wood floors earlier on in 2024. This was what we originally shared, here.
In a nutshell, wood floors in a paler shade are popular because they pair well with darker or patterned décor in an interior. Much like the popularity of neutrals with carpets, light woods also help to open up a room, giving them that extra sense of space. And with more and more people choosing dark glazing or dark décor accents (think stair banisters) in modern home renovations, lighter floors really complement this new trend. But that’s not to say your traditional rich woods aren’t in favour. They are – we’ve just noticed a growing increase in the popularity of floors in lighter woods.
Seen here is the wonderful Ted Todd Raw Cotton engineered wood floor with its light tones with subtle hints of grey and an undulating surface. We laid it to a herringbone pattern in this Knutsford home and finished it with a coating of maintenance oil. The light tones of this floor work very well against the patterned décor in the room, helping to give the room a spacious feel.
Faux silk carpets in bedrooms
In the spaces where the most luxury is sought, like bedrooms, we’ve been busy fitting high-quality faux silk carpets. These 100% nylon, silk-effect carpets are super soft to the touch, so just the thing to step out onto of a morning. But they’re also exceptionally easy to clean if stains or spillages are to occur. Here at Flooring 4 You we stock several of the leading names in faux silk carpets. Plus, we’re skilled at being able to fit them all. These carpets, being of the construction they are, do require a greater attention to detail, which we can provide. And we use a fantastic suite of underlay products from a new supplier we started working with this year: Wilson’s Underlays. So, you can be sure of luxury beneath your carpet, as much as the carpet itself.
This is the ultra-luxurious, seriously elegant Eleganza 11mm faux silk carpet from Artisan Luxury Flooring, which we installed to this beautiful bedroom space at a home in Hale Barns. And this carpet was installed over the Wilson’s 10mm Plushwalk underlay for extra comfort and softness.
Stair runners pairing a neutral middle with darker borders
Stair runners have been huge this year. Huge! And we’re the perfect flooring partner to create your stair runner with because we literally do have so much choice in floorcovering textures, colours, and styles. Not only can we create the perfect stair runner for you, but we can also do it with budget in mind. Now what has stood out this year as the most popular trend with the stair runners we’ve supplied and fitted, is the combination of a pale, neutral middle and a darker border or edge. This stair runner style is definitely one that ticks the home design trends right now. And what’s more, we get a lot of demand for the stair runners to have a herringbone or chevron pattern to the middle. The borders are then either cotton or polypropylene, often in a black colour. And black stair rods are a popular choice to finish stair runners in this style.
Here is an example of one of the stair runners we had made and then installed for a customer in Knutsford across their double staircase. The stair runner was made from the stylish Brockway Gatsby Ivory carpet with its flatweave construction and herringbone detail. It’s been paired with a black cotton border and in this instance, Jubilee stair rods in a Pewter colour.
Sisal and sisal effect carpets in rustic settings
Sisal really does offer a timeless sense of style to any interior setting. And we’re the perfect go-to floor fitters for sisal in terms of our experience fitting this floor as much as the choice of sisal we can offer you. To fit real 100% sisal takes great skill, care and attention to detail – and we have years’ of experience fitting sisal carpets and stair runners. But if real sisal isn’t ideal for you yet you love the look of it, then we’ve got lots of choice of faux, look-a-like sisal floorcoverings to choose from.
More often we fit 100% sisal carpets in more rustic settings, so that might be homes in rural locations like cottages or in converted barns or farmhouses. The demand for faux sisal usually comes from those homes where the stylish look of sisal is sought but the issues around practicality are more pertinent. This is where the 100% polypropylene look-a-like sisals are a good option as they are very hardwearing and far easier to clean. But both look great, and we’ve fitted plenty of both throughout the year!
Here we have an example on the left of a 100% sisal carpet fitting we did in Holmes Chapel. It’s the eco-friendly, elegant Sisal Malay Chen floorcovering from Alternative with its lovely smooth texture. And on the right is the look-a-like sisal New England Bar Harbor floorcovering from Unnatural Flooring. We installed this robust, water-resistant sisal effect floor to this summer house at a home in Alderley Edge.
Parquet herringbone floors remain popular
And if you thought parquet herringbone as a floor laying pattern has seen its time, then think again. It has remained as popular as ever over the course of this year, in both engineered wood and LVT flooring styles as well as large and small sized parquet herringbone planks.
We are seeing some new parquet options coming through in the designs from the leading floor manufacturers. But will they reign triumphant over the understated stylish herringbone laying pattern? We’ll have to wait and see...
Two different floors, both in the popular parquet herringbone laying pattern. On the left is the Amtico Spacia Noble Oak LVT floor we installed in a new kitchen at a home in Altrincham. Our customer chose the small parquet option, and the timeless warm wood look of the floor perfectly complements the modern kitchen units. On the right is the Furrow herringbone plank engineered wood floor in the Ted Todd Warehouse collection. This is one of our bestselling Ted Todd floors, it’s very versatile with its light tones featuring hints of grey. And it looks fantastic in a herringbone pattern as you can see here.
Exciting textures when it comes to fully fitted carpets on stairs
Move over stripes and your regular thin wool loops, our customers are choosing some more exciting textures when it comes to their stairs and landings. From different carpet constructions to interesting weaves, we’ve had the joy and pleasure of fitting more unique carpets across the full width of the stairs in our customers’ homes this year. Perhaps the reason for that is driven by the more exciting choice of carpet designs available today, which are suitable for these hardwearing areas. And better still, we make sure to stock these exciting carpet styles allowing our customers that choice when it comes to home improvement projects.
Let us share these lovely fully fitted stair jobs with you. On the left is the stylish Woosie Boucle Wistful carpet from Alternative. Made from a blend of hardwearing sisal (54%) and super soft wool (46%), it’s versatile and hardwearing while bringing a fantastic different textural dimension to the stairs. And on the right, we have the chunky opulence of the Beachcomber 100% wool loop carpet from Brockway, seen here fitted by us in colour Shingle. Rustic in style, sumptuous underfoot and hardwearing too, it’s perfect for the stairs. And if you look closely, you can see the professional detail we can bring to your stair carpet fitting, as we have whipped the edge of the carpet along the bottom step for the perfect finish.
